Coloring leather is one of the most difficult techniques of all. It can enrich your project or ruin it just as quick.
You can apply the dyes with a brush, sponge, wool dauber or airbrush. When applying the dyes, stains or finishes make sure the working area is well ventilated and your hands and clothes are protected, as some of the dyes and finishes are not as harmless as they seem to be!
There are several kinds of leather dyes and finishes available. Color dyes like Cova Colors, Magix Spray or Tarrago are dyes that - when applied - leave a thin layer on top of the leather. Other dyes like Leather Dye, All-in-one Stain and Hi Lite Stain soak into the leather. There are also dyes available that have both of these characteristics.
Coloring leather works best when the leather surface is clean (not greasy).
Practice makes perfect! That is the best way to get this technique to work for you. Only by trying, mixing colors en sometimes failing at it, you will learn what can and cannot be done.
Fortunately there are books that can help you along with the process of coloring. You can find them in our web shop.
